Answers to some frequently asked questions about North Georgia’s MBA program are below. We hope you find them helpful, but please don’t let them take the place of a one-on-one conversation an advisor. Please contact us. |
Do I have to have a business degree to enter the program? |
No, but you will probably need some foundation, or prerequisite, courses. And calculus is required, whatever degree you hold.
If your undergraduate degree is in an area other than business, or if your undergraduate business degree is from a school whose business program is not separately accredited, a graduate advisor will work with you to determine your needs and map out a plan to help you reach your goals.
You may be able to get the credits you need through self-paced, independent study. Depending on your particular circumstances, if you act quickly, you may be able to complete the prerequisites you need in time to meet the application deadline for the next cohort. |
Do you accept transfer credit? |
No, not usually. A graduate advisor can best help you determine whether specific credits are transferable. |
What is a cohort? Why are cohort programs so popular these days? |
In this context, a cohort is a group of students who go through the MBA program simultaneously. They begin together, progress through the class together and graduate together.
The cohort model makes it feasible for the university to provide rich, comprehensive, high quality academic experiences for specialized programs with small enrollments. Most important, it enhances the educational experience, as students form strong relationships, share professional challenges and bring diverse talents and strengths to the group. |
Typically, there are 30-40 students in a cohort. |
Will all of the courses be available in Cumming or will I have to take some courses in Dahlonega? |
All the courses for North Georgia's MBA program are held in the Cumming Graduate Center. |
What is meant by team-based approaches? Is team work outside of class time required? |
Businesses rely on employee teams to create solutions and accomplish goals, so our program focuses on preparing employees to succeed in team environments.
Teamwork and team projects are integral to the curriculum, especially for the intensive Capstone Leadership Experience that begins about half-way through the degree program. The team components of the program are facilitated by in-person meetings, as well as various communication technologies, such as web conferencing, wikis, and blogs. |
How much time will I need to devote outside of class? |
It’s hard to say exactly how much time you’ll need to spend outside of class, since it’s different for each student. Keep in mind this is graduate level coursework, and each course only meets once a week throughout the semester, so independent study and team communication outside of class time are a significant part of the process by design. |
Do I need a laptop computer? |
Yes. You'll be using certain software, along with other productivity and collaboration tools, throughout the program. |
On what basis are students selected? |
The admissions selection committee members are guided by a formula that balances undergraduate academic performance and GMAT or GRE scores, along with factors in professional background and experience. |
What will my diploma look like? |
The diploma you receive will indicate you have earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the Mike Cottrell School of Business at North Georgia College & State University. |
Are my accounting requirements met for Uniform CPA Examination? |
Yes, if you take all three classes offered (two of which are electives) and you have a BBA in accounting with at least 21 earned semester hours in upper-level accounting. Note that additional educational requirements to take the CPA Exam include:
- a total of 150 earned semester hours, including at least a bachelor's degree
- 24 earned semester hours in general business courses

What if I cannot locate my immunization records? |
If you don’t have records showing proof of immunization, a Titer test, available through your physician or local health department, may be used to confirm the required immunities. Exemptions may apply on religious or medical grounds.
Download the NGCSU certificate of immunization and have it completed by your health care provider. |
